A health spending plan for an incorporated Canadian business reimburses eligible employee medical expenses within a documented allowance. The owner must receive the benefit in an employee capacity, and the arrangement must meet Private Health Services Plan (PHSP) requirements for favourable federal treatment. Incorporation alone does not establish qualification; Québec applies separate provincial taxable-benefit rules.

Confirm the employment relationship and proposed plan with your accountant. Once eligibility is established, start Wellbytes onboarding.

Assess the arrangement behind the HSP or HSA label

“Health spending plan” and “Health Spending Account” describe reimbursement arrangements; they do not create separate Canadian statutory tax categories or a special registered-provider status. Check CRA’s PHSP requirements and the actual benefits and protection.

An HSA is employer-funded. It is not a personal savings or investment account, and an allowance does not provide unlimited medical insurance.

Follow the employee-to-payment workflow

  1. Confirm participants. Establish eligible employees, owner participation and covered family relationships.
  2. Document the plan. Set reasonable allowances, coverage dates, eligible categories, deadlines and funding obligations.
  3. Submit supported expenses. Keep itemized receipts and required prescriptions or certificates.
  4. Review and fund claims. Reimbursement depends on eligibility, available benefits, documents and employer funding.
  5. Apply tax and reporting rules. Assess employer deductibility and employee treatment separately.

Do not assume unrestricted retroactive allowance increases to cover a known expense. Claims and changes must follow the actual plan and applicable requirements.

Keep employer deductions and employee benefits distinct

Qualifying PHSP benefits are generally non-taxable federally to employees. Québec generally treats employer-paid PHSP coverage as a provincial taxable benefit.

Employer deductions depend on incurred business expenses, employment purpose and reasonableness. An unused allowance is not an incurred deduction, and an owner’s personal purchase is not deductible merely because a corporation pays it.

Costs reimbursed through a federally non-taxable benefit cannot also support a federal medical expense tax credit. Assess an eligible unreimbursed portion under the credit’s own conditions.

Check expenses and covered family members

Use the actual medical-expense category. Eligible dental treatment, prescription vision products and recognized practitioner services may qualify; drugs, devices and travel can require additional prescriptions, certification or other evidence.

General wellness purchases do not qualify merely because they support health. Covered family members must meet the plan and PHSP requirements; financial dependence or a family-owned corporation alone does not establish every relative’s eligibility.

Sole proprietors require a separate review. CRA’s HSA warning addresses personal self-insured arrangements without arm’s-length employees; qualifying self-employed PHSP premiums have separate deduction conditions.

Calculate funded costs without calling them savings

Under Wellbytes’ pay-as-you-use terms, administration is 10% of eligible reimbursements plus applicable taxes, with no setup or recurring subscription fee. The employer also funds the reimbursements. Other arrangements follow their accepted terms.

Hypothetical example: $10,000 of eligible reimbursements plus $1,000 administration requires $11,000 before applicable taxes. This calculates funding, not a personal or corporate tax saving.

A person paying a $10,000 bill privately needs $10,000 of available after-tax money. That personal expense and the employer’s $11,000 funded cost are different measures; subtracting them does not demonstrate savings.

Compare protection and verify provider functions

Compare HSA funding and limits with the actual insurance premium, exclusions and risk protection. Qualifying insured health and dental benefits can also receive PHSP treatment. An HSA is not automatically cheaper or equivalent to insurance.
