Questions about eligible expenses

Which expenses can usually be reimbursed through an HSA?
An HSA can generally reimburse medical expenses recognized under the Income Tax Act when the expense, provider and supporting documents meet the applicable requirements. Common areas include dental care, vision care, prescribed drugs, practitioner services, medical devices and certain travel expenses.
Does every eligible expense need a prescription?
No. Some items require a prescription or written certification, while others do not. Review the requirements for the specific expense and keep the receipt and any supporting documentation.
Why does the province or territory matter?
For practitioner services, the exact professional designation and legal authorization matter where the service is rendered. The province selector reflects CRA’s published table, not a licence check. Virtual care across jurisdictions can require a separate licensing review.
What does “conditional” mean?
The expense may qualify only when specific requirements are met. These can include a prescription, written certification, Disability Tax Credit eligibility, medical necessity, distance rules or an authorized provider.
What does “Needs review” mean?
The source or the specific provider does not support a definite answer for this item. Proposed changes and unclear service descriptions need an expense-specific review; this label is not approval or a blanket denial.
Is HSA reimbursement the same as a personal medical-expense tax credit?
No. CRA’s medical-expense rules help identify qualifying costs, but HSA coverage also depends on a qualifying private health services plan (PHSP) and your employer’s plan terms. A directory status does not approve an individual claim. Do not claim the same tax-free reimbursed amount again on your personal tax return.
Does this directory guarantee reimbursement?
No. A claim must still satisfy CRA requirements, the terms of the employer’s plan and Wellbytes’ documentation requirements. The directory is a general guide, not a claim decision or tax advice.

Information is organized from current Canada Revenue Agency medical-expense guidance. Eligibility can depend on documentation, practitioner authorization, the service location and your plan terms.
