When reviewing HSA family claims, separate the covered person, expense eligibility, available plan benefit, employer deduction and employee tax treatment. A professional title or a complete receipt does not settle all five questions.

Private Health Services Plan (PHSP) Coverage and the Personal Medical Expense Tax Credit

CRA’s current PHSP guidance describes coverage for the employee, the employee’s spouse or common-law partner, and members of the employee’s household connected by blood relationship, marriage or adoption. The actual plan can impose narrower coverage terms. A family relationship alone does not establish coverage for every relative living elsewhere.

The personal medical expense tax credit has its own claimant, dependant, age, residency and threshold rules. Do not automatically import those tests into PHSP family coverage or assume the HSA covers every relative. Confirm the actual relationship, household and plan facts.

A qualifying HSA is an employer medical reimbursement arrangement, not a personal investment account. Its credits do not automatically accumulate indefinitely or build tax-free investment wealth.

Employer, Owner and Participant Review

An incorporated owner must receive the benefit in an employee capacity rather than solely as a shareholder. Partners, contractors and self-employed practitioners require a separate arrangement assessment. Qualifying self-employed PHSP premiums have their own conditions and deduction limits.

Qualifying employee PHSP medical benefits are generally non-taxable federally; Québec has separate provincial taxable-benefit rules. Employer deductibility depends on qualifying costs, employment purpose, reasonableness and the actual arrangement. An unused allowance alone is not an incurred deduction.

For the federal personal credit, exclude expenses reimbursed through a federally non-taxable benefit. CRA provides a separate exception for qualifying taxable reimbursements included in income and not deducted elsewhere. A corporate deduction and a personal non-refundable credit are different calculations; neither is universally superior.

Review Medical and Wellness Categories Separately

Eligible dental, prescription vision, qualifying drug and recognized-practitioner expenses may be considered within the actual plan. Check the actual service jurisdiction and any required prescription, certification or other evidence. A category label alone does not establish every claim.

Vitamins and supplements are ineligible even if prescribed, except B12 therapy prescribed for pernicious anaemia. Gym memberships and general lifestyle purchases are separate from medical claims. Permitted personal WSA reimbursements are generally taxable and do not expand the HSA’s eligible medical categories.

A $9,500 Funding Illustration

Assume a qualifying employer plan actually reimburses $9,500 of eligible employee and covered-family expenses. At an assumed 10% administration rate, administration is $950 and total funding is $10,450 before applicable taxes and separate charges.

This hypothetical illustration calculates funding only. It does not establish $2,850, $4,370 or five-year tax savings. A valid net comparison requires actual employer and personal tax facts, complete charges, eligible expenses and equivalent protection.

Keep a Reconciled Claim File

  1. Document the employer, qualifying arrangement and covered people.
  2. Confirm reasonable allowances, periods and claim deadlines.
  3. Retain itemized receipts and category-specific supporting records.
  4. Identify other-plan reimbursements and the remaining amount eligible for consideration.
  5. Reconcile claims, administration, applicable taxes, employer funding and payments.
  6. Apply actual reporting requirements and retain records for the applicable period.

CRA generally requires records for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to, with exceptions. A platform or accountant does not remove the taxpayer’s record responsibilities.

Compare Limits, Funding and Insurance

An HSA benefit has limits; family coverage does not automatically double an allowance or guarantee every expense is fully reimbursed. Compare the actual insurance benefits, premiums, exclusions and high-cost risks that remain outside the HSA.

Under Wellbytes’ current HSA Pay-as-You-Use terms, administration is 10% of eligible reimbursed amounts plus applicable taxes, with no setup or recurring subscription fee. Other arrangements follow their accepted terms.

Confirm the actual submission, tracking, export and support functions. No software, automatic flagging feature, provider or claim review establishes instant payment, tax qualification or audit protection.

Review Wellbytes’ current terms and ask about the employer’s proposed family coverage.
