An HSA can provide an employer-funded medical reimbursement benefit within the actual plan and available allowance. It does not automatically eliminate personal costs, replace insurance protection or create a personal account for every business owner.

Understand the Benefit and Remaining Risk

An HSA allowance defines the reimbursement available under the plan. An insured policy covers specified risks under its own benefits, exclusions, deductibles and limits. Check which costs remain the participant’s responsibility rather than assuming either arrangement guarantees every medical bill.

PHSP qualification includes the required nature-of-insurance elements. Wellbytes provides administration; choosing an administrator does not by itself establish qualification or unlimited insured protection.

Confirm the Employer and Covered People

For an incorporated owner, the benefit must arise in an employee capacity rather than solely as a shareholder. Family coverage depends on actual PHSP covered-person, related-household and plan conditions.

CRA’s archived warning addresses the HSA arrangement described for a sole proprietor without arm’s-length employees. Qualifying self-employed PHSP premiums have separate contract, income, employee and deduction-limit requirements. Neither incorporation nor a self-employed title alone settles every case.

Separate Funding and Tax Treatment

Qualifying employee PHSP benefits are generally non-taxable federally; Québec has separate provincial taxable-benefit rules. Employer deductions depend on qualifying costs, employment purpose, reasonableness and actual business facts. An unused allowance or deposit alone is not an incurred deduction.

Do not treat personal payroll contributions as automatically pre-tax or every insurance premium as non-deductible. Qualifying insured PHSP benefits, self-employed premiums and personal medical credits have their own applicable treatment.

A $5,000 Medical-Expense Funding Example

Assume a qualifying employer plan actually reimburses $5,000 of eligible expenses for covered people. At an assumed 10% administration rate, administration is $500 and total funding is $5,500 before applicable taxes and separate charges.

This hypothetical calculation is not a net saving or a complete comparison with personal payment. Actual tax effects require consistent employer and personal tax facts, fees, provincial treatment and any medical-expense credit. The reimbursement does not make the employer’s cost disappear.

Check the Medical Expense

Potential categories include eligible dental treatment, prescription eyewear, qualifying drugs and recognized-practitioner services. Check the actual service jurisdiction and any prescription, certification or other category requirements. A nutrition, wellness or therapy label does not qualify every service.

A costly or elective procedure is not excluded merely because it is costly or elective. Purely cosmetic services and related expenses are excluded unless necessary for medical or reconstructive purposes. Under the usual drug rule, the medicine must legally require a prescription and the purchase must be recorded by a pharmacist; specific exceptions have their own requirements.

Gym memberships and ordinary vitamins or supplements are ineligible even if prescribed, except B12 therapy prescribed for pernicious anaemia.

Allowances, Carry-Forward and Other Coverage

Document reasonable employment-based allowances, periods and deadlines. There is no single universal CRA annual dollar allowance for every employer HSA. A qualifying flexible plan may permit either unused credits or eligible expenses to carry forward for up to 12 months, not both; this is not an indefinitely accumulating personal asset.

Disclose other reimbursement and submit only the remaining amount eligible for consideration. Compare actual insurance protection and complete charges rather than treating a low-claim year as proof that insurance premiums were wasted.

Keep the Claim and Payment Evidence

Confirm the covered person and eligible category, keep itemized receipts and required medical evidence, follow agreed review and employer-funding terms, and retain the decision and payment records. Apply actual tax reporting and retention requirements.

Under Wellbytes’ current HSA Pay-as-You-Use terms, administration is 10% of eligible reimbursed amounts plus applicable taxes, with no setup or recurring subscription fee. Other arrangements follow their accepted terms. Confirm current digital and support functions; no provider guarantees same-day reimbursement, lower total costs or future policy expansion.

Review Wellbytes’ current terms and assess the actual benefit and remaining costs before choosing an arrangement.
