An expense connected with Canadian medical assistance in dying (MAID) is not automatically eligible for HSA reimbursement. Confirm public coverage first, then assess any actual unreimbursed fee under its specific medical-expense category and employer plan. HSA administration does not determine clinical eligibility or care decisions.

Keep care eligibility separate from reimbursement

Health Canada’s guidance explains the legal eligibility framework and safeguards. Discuss clinical questions and care options with the healthcare team; a benefit administrator’s claim decision does not establish eligibility for MAID.

Check the actual expense

  • Public or private coverage: do not submit a cost already reimbursed elsewhere.
  • Palliative, nursing or attendant care: check the specific service, certification, facility and limit requirements. General home help is not automatically eligible.
  • Psychological services: verify the practitioner’s recognition in the service jurisdiction and the actual service. General wellness or grief support is not automatically a qualifying medical expense.

Apply the employer plan’s conditions

A Canadian employer HSA reimburses eligible medical expenses within the available benefit. Private Health Services Plan qualification, the employment relationship, covered people, documentation and applicable federal and provincial rules determine treatment.

Historical service counts or health-system cost models do not establish an individual’s motives, savings or reimbursement entitlement.

Confirm public coverage with the care team or provincial or territorial program. For an actual remaining expense, provide the administrator with the itemized records required by the plan.
