An overage dependant is a child who has reached an age or other coverage limit under the applicable benefits policy. Continued coverage may depend on student, disability or other contract conditions. Administrators should confirm eligibility, required evidence and deadlines before promising an extension.

Criteria for Overage Dependents

Some policies extend coverage for eligible students after the ordinary child age limit. Confirm the actual age range, study requirements and required evidence rather than assuming coverage until age 26.

  • Student status: check whether the policy requires full-time attendance, an eligible institution or an approved co-op program, and how the plan defines those terms.
  • Dependency and work: check the actual policy’s financial-dependency and employment requirements. A 30-hour weekly work limit is not a universal Canadian rule.
  • Relationship status: check whether the policy requires the child to be unmarried or not in a common-law relationship. A change does not automatically create coverage under a spouse’s plan.

Disability continuation depends on the policy’s eligibility, timing and documentation conditions. CRA recognition alone does not automatically extend every benefits contract beyond age 26.

Administrator Responsibilities

Use the actual policy and current participant records for these checks:

Notify the employee and insurer when a dependant may approach a coverage limit. Confirm what information is required and submit it securely; do not assume Wellbytes automatically detects and notifies every transition.

Check whether the policy requires periodic student or disability confirmation and by what deadline. Use the administrator’s documented process rather than assuming an annual Wellbytes letter is always issued.

Regular review of active employees and dependents: It’s advisable for Plan Administrators to periodically review the list of active employees and their dependents to prevent the payment of premiums or claims for ineligible dependents. This ensures that the benefits plan remains cost-effective and aligned with the organization’s policies.

Keep dependant records current, explain actual eligibility and renewal requirements, and obtain confirmation before promising continued coverage.
